Sachin Tendulkar played a lone ranger in his 400th ODI appearance but India put up a pathetic batting display and were bundled out for just 148 by fiery Australian pacers in the fifth match of the series in Vadodara on Thursday.
The hosts were skittled for a record low score at the Reliance Stadium of 148 in only 39.4 overs on a wicket which is traditionally batsmen-friendly.
Left arm pacer Mitchell Johnson grabbed five wickets after rocking India with a three-wicket first spell in which he sent back Yuvraj Singh, Robin Uthappa and Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, all in single digits.
Tendulkar scored 47 but apart from that there was nothing noteworthy in the Indian innings.
Tendulkar hit nine fours in 73 balls during which he saw a procession of batsmen making their way back to leave the home team tottering at 43 for five in under ten overs.
After electing to bat, India suffered two blows in the very first over of the innings with Sourav Ganguly being run after a mix-up and Brett Lee (2-42) dismissing Rahul Dravid lbw for a first ball-duck, reducing India to five for two.
Wicket keeper Adam Gilchrist pouched six catches, four of these off Johnson, the fifth occasion the veteran stumper had done this feat.
Johnson, came back for a second spell and got rid off Irfan Pathan (26) and Murali Kartik for a duck to finish with splendid figures of 5 for 26, his career-best and first-ever five wicket haul.
Tendulkar dropped anchor at the other end, mixing caution with aggression.
The champion batsman, who joined Sri Lanka's Sanath Jayasuriya to have played 400 ODIs, put on 49 runs with Irfan Pathan (26) for the sixth wicket to repair the big damage.
Tendulkar departed halfway through when Lee returned for his second spell. He was caught behind off an out swinger.
The Indians were caught napping by the aggressive Australians, who came hard at them after their loss in Chandigarh.
The only man to baulk them and even counter-punch his way out of the mire was Tendulkar.
But in a way Tendulkar was responsible for the beginning of the shocking and steep slide of the Indian innings.
