Webinfosys's Local News : Aarushi murder: CBI detains Rajkumar

NEW DELHI: Still looking for leads in the Noida double murder case, the CBI on Thursday detained Rajkumar, domestic help of the Durranis, Times Now reported. Dr Anita Durrani and Dr Praful Durrani are family friends and professional associates of the Talwar couple.

Earlier, Rajkumar had been released from detention by the CBI on Wednesday night. He was again held by the investigating agency at 6:15 am on Thursday.

The CBI had summoned Dr Anita Durrani and her husband Dr Praful Durrani for questioning on Wednesday. The couple was grilled for several hours. It has been learnt that the two were also subjected to a psycho-analysis test. The CBI had conducted a lie detector test on their help, Rajkumar, on Tuesday.

Talwar's compounder Krishna, meanwhile, continues to be in the custody of the CBI. Looking for a breakthrough in the case, the CBI is probing all angles including the role of neighbours and their domestic helps.

The investigators are also looking at the possibility that Aarushi's murder may have been a contract killing. Aarushi's mother Nupur had apparently withdrawn Rs 26,000 from her HDFC Bank account two days before the murder.

Webinfosys's Local News : Lenient sentence for Indian-origin fraudster in US

NEW YORK: An Indian-origin man who masterminded a major international fraud that led to USD 680 million in losses to 20 banks worldwide has escaped with a lighter sentence of seven months in prison, the time he has already served.

Anil Anand, former chief financial officer of Allied Deals Inc -- a metals trading firm, was also asked by US District Court to pay USD 683.6 million in restitution.

Anand, 46, had pleaded guilty to the charges in 2002 and faced upto 30 years in prison but escaped with a lenient sentence because he cooperated with prosecutors which resulted in the arrest of at least 15 people.

The defrauded banks, located in the United States, Europe and Asia, included JPMorgan Chase & Co, Fleet National Bank; PNC Bank; Dresdner Bank Lateinamerika AG; China Trust Bank; and Hypo Vereins Bank.

US District Attorney for Southern District of New York Michael J Garcia said Allied Deals companies were controlled by brothers Narendra Rastogi in the US and Virendra Rastogi in Britain.

Anand and the Rastogi brothers and their co-conspirators had set up and controlled an elaborate network of hundreds of sham, nominee companies around the world to serve as fake purchasers of metal from Allied Deals so that the defendants could get loans from the victim banks.

But the prosecutors said "hundreds, if not thousands," of metal transactions upon which the loans were based simply did not exist.

Webinfosys's Local News : Flood situation in Orissa grim

BHUBANESWAR: Thousands of people are going without food in Orissa's flood-hit Balasore district as the swirling waters have made it impossible for the administration to reach the marooned villages, officials admitted on Thursday.

About one million people in north Orissa have been hit by the floods with rivers breaching their banks following five days of incessant rains. Balasore is one of the worst hit districts with 800,000 people affected and hundreds of villages still inaccessible.

"We could not manage to reach thousands of victims due to the disruption of road communications and the undercurrents in the water that make it difficult for boats to ply," Kulamani Mishra, a relief official, said from Balasore.

"We moved more than 40,000 people to safe shelters - on the roads, high rise buildings and schools - and are providing them food through 80 free kitchens," Mishra said.

He added that 849 villages in the district were cut off for the last two days. "There have been at least three breaches in the national highway 60 that goes through the region and we are not able to use the road to send relief."

About 200 boats had been deployed, including 150 "country boats" which were unable to carry relief because of the currents.

Though the administration was trying to deal with the situation by dropping food packets, the situation was grim.

The flash floods triggered by heavy rains have led to five major rivers, including the Subarnarekha and Mahanadi, and all their tributaries overflowing in five districts.

The disaster has reportedly killed at least seven people although officials confirm only two deaths. It has submerged thousands of acres of land, snapped electricity supply and disrupted road and train services in most of the affected areas.

"We have deployed a large number of boats, and hundreds of personnel of the Orissa Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) and fire service in the affected areas to carry out relief and rescue operations," Revenue Minister Manmohan Samal said.

The next few day could see the situation worsen with rains continuing in the region and in the upper catchments areas.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall likely to occur at a few places with extremely heavy falls (more than 25cm) at isolated places over north Orissa, the Bhubaneswar meteorological office said in a release.
